When You’re at a Standstill: Tools to Get Your Marriage Moving Again

Feeling stuck in the same argument over and over? Five ways couples can break through a stalemate.

Feeling stuck in the same argument over and over? You’re not alone. Every couple hits a wall sometimes. The key isn’t avoiding conflict, it’s learning how to move through it without tearing each other apart. Based on research from top relationship experts like Drs. John and Julie Gottman, here are five ways couples can break through a stalemate:

  1. Slow down and really listen. Not just to reply, but to understand.
  2. Use a scale. Ask each other how strongly you feel about the issue, from 1 to 10. If your spouse is at a 9 and you’re at a 3, that tells you something.
  3. Let go of needing to be right. Choose being connected over winning.
  4. Create ground rules for tough talks. No name-calling, no interrupting, and take breaks if needed.
  5. Don’t be afraid to get help. A good therapist isn’t there to take sides, but to help you both feel heard and find a path forward.

Marriage isn’t about never fighting, it’s about learning how to fight well. You’re two different people, with different histories and ways of seeing the world. That’s normal. What matters most is that you’re still willing to try, to care, to grow. Even when things feel hard. Especially when they feel hard. You’re not stuck unless you stop trying. Keep leaning in. There’s always another way through, together.

Rooting for you,

Jason and Dr. Steph
